I often cary a sketchbook and travel with watercolors.  Drawing a scene or composition from real life, helps me to see the world around me, notice the detail and form.  All of these sketches are completed in one sitting, and some of the line work is done in a continuous motion without lifting the pen or sketching in pencil first.  Most of the color is watercolor and some pen.
