After moving to Portland at the end of 1998, I started painting some panels with various cropped and mapped-out imagery including figurative, still-life and landscape based abstractions. The first face image here was one that was well received because the viewer can easily switch their perspective between areas of painted color and the visual content (the face). In the spirit of experimentation, I began painting many versions of this face and a few others. Various treatment of this mapped area provides context for the subtleties of each technique and medium. Without the concern for “what to paint”, I could easily jump into a project and immerse myself in the process.
The second section of this gallery will provide you with samples of other series and further play with visual pattern and color.
